How many clinical hours you need, by program

The short answer

Every nurse practitioner program requires at least 750 direct patient care hours, and a DNP requires at least 1,000 practice hours after the bachelor’s degree. Counseling students complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship, social work students complete 400 field hours in a BSW and 900 in an MSW, and behavior analysis candidates complete 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork, or 1,500 concentrated. Your school can ask for more, so its handbook has the final number.

The minimums at a glance

Each profession’s accrediting body sets a floor, and each school builds its own plan on top of it. The table below gathers the national minimums in one place. Use it to understand the size of what is ahead, then check your program handbook for the exact hours, the courses they belong to and any extra hours your school adds.

Nurse practitioner programs: at least 750 direct patient care hours

The National Task Force standards for nurse practitioner education set a minimum of 750 direct patient care clinical hours for every NP program, whatever the population focus: family, adult-gerontology primary or acute care, pediatrics, psychiatric-mental health, women’s health or neonatal. The hours are spent in the role and population you are preparing for, with a preceptor who supervises your care of real patients.

Direct patient care includes care delivered through telehealth, so a well-supervised telehealth visit counts in the same way as an in-person one. Simulation is valuable practice, and the standards count it apart from direct patient care, so simulated hours do not reduce the 750. Many programs ask for more than the minimum, often spread across three or four clinical courses, each with its own share of the total.

If you are completing a second population focus or a post-graduate certificate, your program reviews what you have already done and sets the hours you still need in the new population. The handbook or your clinical coordinator gives you that number in writing, which is worth keeping with your records.

DNP: 1,000 practice hours after the bachelor’s degree

A Doctor of Nursing Practice requires at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice after the bachelor’s degree, completed as part of an academic program. If you enter the DNP with a master’s degree, your program looks at the supervised hours from that degree and plans the rest of the 1,000 with you, so the number you complete in the DNP itself is often smaller.

DNP hours are built around your scholarly project: improving care, outcomes or systems in a real practice setting. That means your mentor or site supervisor is often a doctorally prepared clinician or leader in the setting where your project lives, and your hours include the work of planning, implementing and evaluating the project there.

Counseling: a practicum, then an internship

Programs accredited under the CACREP 2024 standards follow a two-stage path. The practicum comes first: at least 100 hours over a full academic term of at least eight weeks, including at least 40 hours of direct service with actual clients. The internship follows the practicum: 600 hours of supervised counseling in roles and settings that match your specialized practice area, including at least 240 hours of direct service.

During either the practicum or the internship, you also lead or co-lead a counseling or psychoeducational group. Supervision runs alongside both stages, from your site supervisor and from your program, so your weekly schedule includes supervision time as well as time with clients.

Social work: field education hours

Field education is the signature part of a social work degree. Under the Council on Social Work Education’s accreditation standards, BSW programs require at least 400 hours of field education and MSW programs require at least 900. You complete them in an agency under a field instructor, with a learning agreement that sets out the competencies you will build during the placement.

Advanced standing MSW students, who enter with a recent BSW, usually complete the specialized portion of the MSW field hours, because their BSW placement covered the generalist year. Your program confirms how its hours are split between years.

Behavior analysis: supervised fieldwork toward the BCBA

Students working toward Board Certified Behavior Analyst certification complete supervised fieldwork as well as their coursework. Under the BACB’s current requirements, that is 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork, or 1,500 hours of concentrated supervised fieldwork, which carries more supervision for each hour. Fieldwork is supervised by a qualified supervisor and documented carefully, because the BACB reviews it when you apply for the exam.

The BACB updates its requirements from time to time, so the BCBA Handbook is the place to confirm the current rules before you plan your fieldwork.

What counts as a clinical hour

The details differ between professions and schools, but most programs agree on the basics:

  • Time you spend providing care or services to real patients or clients, under your preceptor or supervisor, in the role you are preparing for.
  • Telehealth care in NP programs, where your school accepts it, counted as direct patient care.
  • Supervision meetings in counseling and behavior analysis, which have their own required amounts.
  • Indirect activities, such as documentation, case conferences and project work, only where your program says they count, and up to the limit it sets.
  • Hours outside the dates of your clinical course, or before your paperwork is approved, usually do not count, so check that everything is in place before your first day.

Planning your hours across terms

A short plan made early keeps your hours on track from the first course to the last:

  1. 1Read your clinical handbookNote the total hours, the hours in each course, and any rules about settings, preceptor credentials and telehealth.
  2. 2Map hours to termsWrite down which course needs which hours, and in which term, so you know when each placement has to start.
  3. 3Start your preceptor search earlyMany schools ask students to secure a preceptor one to two terms before the course begins, because affiliation agreements and approvals take time.
  4. 4Log your hours as you goRecord each day in your school’s logging system the same week, with your preceptor’s sign-off, so your totals are always current.
  5. 5Check your totals before each course endsCompare your logged hours with the course requirement while there is still time to add a clinical day if you need one.

Questions students ask

How many clinical hours does an FNP student need?

At least 750 direct patient care hours under the National Task Force standards. Many FNP programs require more, spread across several clinical courses.

Do telehealth hours count toward NP clinical hours?

Yes. The 2022 National Task Force standards count care delivered through telehealth as direct patient care. Your school sets how many of your hours may be virtual.

Does simulation count toward the 750 NP hours?

No. Simulation is counted separately from direct patient care, so simulated hours do not reduce the 750.

How many hours is a counseling internship?

Under the CACREP 2024 standards, 600 hours, including at least 240 hours of direct service, after a practicum of at least 100 hours.

How many field hours does an MSW require?

At least 900 hours of field education, under CSWE’s accreditation standards. A BSW requires at least 400.

Can hours from my master’s program count toward a DNP?

Often, yes. A DNP needs at least 1,000 practice hours after the bachelor’s degree, so your program reviews the supervised hours from your master’s degree and plans the remainder with you.
